Why anxiety returns, even when your clients have made real progress

You did good work together. She used the tools. She got better. And then somewhere between four months and two years later, she came back, wearing something that looked different.

We were trained to manage anxiety, not to uncreate it.
Thursday 27 August 10am to 11.30am AEST Live, with Q and A

The client you already know

Maybe the panic attacks stopped, and now she cannot make a decision without three days of agonising. Maybe the social anxiety lifted and the health anxiety arrived. Maybe she is fine, genuinely fine, until her daughter starts showing the same thing at the same age.

Same root. New branch.

If you have been practising more than a few years, you have seen this. Not once. Repeatedly. And you have probably concluded what most of us concluded, which is that the work was not finished, or the client did not maintain it, or life threw something bigger at her than the tools could hold.

In this masterclass I want to offer you a different explanation, and I want to be clear from the outset that it is not a session about what you are doing wrong. You have been practising responsibly with what you were given. The gap is not in your effort and it is not in your skill. It is in what nobody taught any of us.

What we cover

01

Why anxiety returns after good work

Why the return is predictable rather than random, and why it is not evidence that you failed the client.

02

How anxiety is actually created

The mechanism, the sequence and the conditions. Named, and walked through properly rather than gestured at.

03

What has to happen for it to be uncreated

Why this is a different category of work rather than a better version of what you are already doing.

The Fear to Freedom Framework

Five stages, and one that is missing from most training

Go back through everything you were trained in and look for the stage where the meaning is uncreated and the protection stands down. For most of us it is not there.

1 Fear Safety came into question
2 Meaning I am not safe. A decision follows
3 Anxiety Creation Protection built, then repeated
4 Anxiety Uncreation The stage not on the map
5 Freedom Return to the true self

Freedom is the return to the true self.

Not credentials. Readiness.

This is for you if

You work with anxious people And you want to know how to support them better.
You are ready for a whole new perspective Not treating it, not handing over coping strategies, not managing it for life.
You are tired of watching it return Despite your commitment, and despite your client's.
You want to know what actually works Rather than what is simply standard.
Who is teaching this

Sue Stevenson

I did not arrive at this through theory. I arrived at it standing in my own kitchen, thirty years into a career in schools and counselling, watching my daughter struggle and finding that everything I had been trained to do did not reach her.

I saw a counsellor. Then a psychologist. Both told me I was doing everything I could and needed to give it time.

Time was not the intervention. Time with nothing changing is just waiting.

What I found, once I stopped accepting that, is that anxiety is created. And what is created can be uncreated, though not with tools designed to make it more comfortable to live with.

32 years in teaching, counselling and student wellbeing. B.Ed in Psychology, Health and Human Development. Postgraduate Diploma in Student Wellbeing. Global Women of Influence Award winner, 2024. Creator of the Fear to Freedom Framework, and of the Fear to Freedom practitioner training.
